What Is Worship?
Webster's dictionary: Worship is to exalt honor with extravagant love and extreme submission.
In the Bible 80% of the time the word used for worship is "proskuno" or "shachah" which can be defined as humbling oneself before some else, bowing before them as your superior. The word "letreuo" is also used meaning to serving as a priest. Sometime we find the word "sebomai" referring to show devotion or reverence for someone.
Because we are God's children we must worship God because He demands us to do so, He commands it, and we must worship in ways that are pleasing to Him. God only accepts the form of worship that He has directed. Just as God is immutable, so is His written word. We cannot change it to be what we want it to be to please ourselves. God must be the center of our worship and not ourselves. We are to worship in spirit and truth because God is spirit and His ways are true. While it is emotional to worship God, the feel good emotion must not be what we seek but rather the pleasing of God in our worship.
Holy Scripture shows us ways that we are to worship.
1. Praise and thanksgiving
2. Joyful songs
3. Dancing
4. Observing annual feast days
5. Cheerful help to others
6. Using one's spiritual gifts
7. Be a living sacrifice
All Christians are to worship God. We must demonstrate the respect and honor that we have in our heart for a sovereign holy God, who created all things and gave His Son as a ransom for our sins in substitution for us. Christ suffered, died and was resurrected so that we might live with Him in all eternity.
