The Apocrypha
During the period between the Old Testament and the New Testament other Jewish books were written. These books as a group are called the "APOCRYPHA" which comes from the Greek "apokryphos" that means hidden or secret. Neither to the Jewish people of Jesus' day nor in the present time do these books have the authority of the canonical books. The Holy Spirit was not inactive in the world but His unique work of inspiring authors of Scripture had ceased. These books are as follows.
1 Edras, 2 Edras, Epistle of Jeremiah,
Prayer of Azariah, Tobit, Susanna, Judith,
Bel and the Dragon, Additions to Esther,
Prayer of Manasseh, Wisdom of Solomon,
1 Maccabees, 2 Maccabees,
Ecclesiaticus (or Sirach), Baruch
As stated in the article entitled "The Canon of the Old Testament" we find that the Jewish Bible is organized differently from the Christian Bible. This is because of a widely used Greek translation called "The Septuagint" which is often abbreviated "LXX" because of the seventy scholars who translated it. The Septuagint contains all the books of the Jewish Bible and the Apocrypha which is also include in the Roman Catholic Bible but is not found in most protestant Bibles.
