Isaiah 6
1 In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple.
5 Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts.
6 Then flew one of the seraphims unto me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar:
7 And he laid it upon my mouth, and said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged.
God allowed Isaiah to see Him as He is, or at least as much as He wanted Isaiah to see him. When Isaiah saw God he realized the magnificence and sovereignty of God and at the same time saw himself as he truly was. He realized his state of being unclean and undone, a man of iniquity! It is important to note here that Isaiah did not ask for a cleansing but the angel laid the coal upon his lips and his sins were purged. He allowed the coal to be placed upon his lips.
Isaiah was given two gifts in this scripture. One, he was given the ability to see the real Isaiah and he knew that he didn’t want to stay in this present condition. Two, he was given the ability to believe (faith) that God could change him into a person with a clean heart, removed far from the old Isaiah.
All of us because of the fall of Adam are born with a sinful nature that will never allow us to see ourselves as we really are, sinners at enmity with God, dead in our trespasses, a slave to sin. This sinful nature is filled with ego and pride that forms a barrier between God and man. There is no desire to change our lives.
The ability to see our self as we are in an eternally lost state of being cannot be accomplished by human reason and it cannot be brought into existence by any means other than the work of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, it is God given! His gift to those whom He would redeem.
Ezekiel 1119 And I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within you; and I will take the stony heart out of their flesh, and will give them an heart of flesh:
20 That they may walk in my statutes, and keep mine ordinances, and do them: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God.
